There's a strange feeling in the air lately. Everyone's talking about artificial intelligence — on the news, at dinner tables, in the paper — and yet very few people feel like they actually understand it. If that's you, you're in very good company.
We started Practical AI for a simple reason: the technology is racing ahead, but the explanations haven't kept up. Most of what's written about AI is either breathless hype or dense jargon. Neither helps a curious person who just wants to know what all the fuss is about, whether they should care, and how to use these tools without feeling foolish.
The problem isn't you
If you've ever felt behind, or like you're the only one who doesn't quite "get it," please hear this clearly: the problem isn't you. It's the way this stuff is usually taught.
Technology has a bad habit of talking down to people, or hiding simple ideas behind complicated words. A "large language model" sounds intimidating. What it actually does — predict helpful text, one word at a time — is something we can explain over a cup of tea. Once you see it plainly, the fear tends to melt away, and curiosity takes its place.
Our belief is simple: technology should feel like a friend, not a test.
What we believe
A few principles shape everything we do:
- Calm over hype. We won't tell you AI is going to change everything tomorrow, or that you must rush to keep up. We'll show you what's genuinely useful, today, at a human pace.
- Plain language, always. No jargon without a plain-English translation. If we use a term like "prompt" or "model," we'll explain it the first time and never assume you remember.
- Hands-on, not theoretical. You'll bring your own laptop and try things yourself. Watching someone else click buttons teaches you very little; doing it yourself changes everything.
- Small and personal. Groups of 8 to 12 people, so there's always time for your questions. There is genuinely no such thing as a silly question here.
- Safety first. A big part of confidence is knowing what not to do — spotting scams, protecting your privacy, and knowing when to be sceptical.
Who it's for
We designed Practical AI with people over 50 especially in mind — not because anyone else isn't welcome (everyone is), but because that's often the group that's been left out of the conversation. You've watched technology change enormously over your life. You're perfectly capable of learning this too. You just deserve to learn it somewhere warm, patient, and face to face.
You might want to feel safer online. You might want to save time on everyday admin. You might simply want to understand the headlines. Wherever you're starting from, we'll meet you there.
How the sessions work
We run three evening sessions each week, and we repeat them every week, so you can come at your own rhythm. There's a natural progression — from understanding the basics, to using AI in everyday life, to going a little further — but every session stands on its own. And you can retake any class for free, as many times as you like. We even record every session and share it with everyone who attends.
Over the next few posts, we'll walk through exactly what each of the three levels covers, so you know what to expect. But the short version is this: you'll leave each evening understanding a little more, feeling a little more capable, and genuinely curious about what's next.
That's the whole idea. Come and be curious with us.
Curious to learn this in person?
Every idea in this post is something we cover, calmly and hands-on, in our small face-to-face sessions. Join the waitlist and we’ll let you know when the next group opens.
